A Digital camera is the latest innovation in photography. What has greatly added to the charm of the digital cameras is the large numbers of photographs that can be taken, the ability to view the images without printing them, the easy editing and modification of the pictures using advanced software programs and the hassle-free printing of the pictures. These capabilities of the digital camera are made possible by the digital camera drivers. A digital camera driver allows the camera to interact with the computer. It acts as an interface which allows the communication between the camera and the computer. They perform the role of intermediate layers between hardware and the operating system or any particular software application and enhance the effectiveness of the communication between them. They also protect the operating system from certain types of applications which allow customization. The choice of the correct driver is important for the proper configuration of the computer system. A digital camera driver is needed for transferring and the images present on the memory card of the camera to the computer or operating the images on the camera itself. Installation of the driver for digital camera

There is an option for adding both scanners and cameras in the control panel of the start menu. It can be accessed by going to printers and related hardware in control panel and selecting the option called cameras and scanners. A welcome message will be displayed, following which; the camera should be connected to the computer by using the data cable provided. The data cable usually connects to the USB port or in case of the latest digital cameras, to the firewire. In the installation wizard, select the option called automatic port detection and proceed by clicking the button for next. A list appears in which the model and make of your camera will be listed. The corresponding name should be selected and proceed by clicking next. In case the name of the camera is not listed, the driver must be installed from the disk which came along with the camera. Follow the instruction of the installation wizard after inserting the disk. The camera should be switched on and a suitable name of your choice must be entered in the space provided by the wizard. The process can be completed by clicking on the finished button.

Uses of digital camera drivers

Apart from providing the necessary interface between the camera and the computer, a digital camera driver allows the user to perform various functions on the camera. The user can view, copy or delete the images. Each time the camera is connected, some drivers allow the user to copy all the untransferred images from the camera to the computers without having to do it manually. The drivers also allow the users to print the images according to the dimensions chosen by them. Although the recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with a plug and play feature, which exempts the users from the need to install additional digital camera drivers, the users of the previous versions of Windows, who make up a large chunk of Windows users, need to install these drivers in order to access their photographs.

Other manufacturers are Adaptec, AGFA, BenQ, BTC, Casio, Clevo, DigitalDream, Dolphin, Eltron, Emporex, Olympus, Polaroid etc.
