4 Traits To Watch Out For When You Buy Your Olympus Flash

The Olympus Flash has the potential to immensely increase the characteristics of your photographs. Personally, I use an Olympus E-510, although you may use another make, so replace Olympus with the model of your SLR. I decided to buy the Olympus Flash FL-50 a few years ago, and I quickly saw a large improvement in my photographs. The reason for this was obvious: off-camera flashes, such as my Olympus Flash, grant you creative versatility.

There exist many other camera flashes that you can attach to your DSLR. However, it is best to obtain the camera flash for your camera type. It will probably be more expensive, but it comes with features that other generic off-camera flashes will not have. And if you plan on having better photographs, using an Olympus Flash with an Olympus SLR is worth the extra cost.

What traits should you ask about when getting an Olympus Flash? There are a lot of models of off-camera flashes, that it is hard to immediately know if what you have is what you want. Here is a series of 4 traits that you can watch for.

1 – Size: How big is your Olympus Flash?. Usually, the larger the flash the more powerful it is. This is extremely useful since it reaches further. Keep in mind though, this might make it much more pricey. If you know you will only take pictures inside your house, then you may not require a strong camera flash. However, if you want to use it in concert halls, then you will have need for a very powerful off-camera flash. Small flashes do exist, and these are easier to carry around than the larger off-camera flashes, as they are easy to fit in your pocket.

2 – Shutter Rating: What is the smallest shutter speed your flash will operate at? Your full image sensor needs to be exposed when the Olympus Flash turns on. If the frame shutter rate is too fast, and the camera flash can not synchronize to it, then this will not occur, and your image can not be exposed properly. This is partly a feature of the SLR as well, so make sure to match both of these features!

3 – Control: What types of options do you like? Personally, I prefer being able to adjust everything by hand, as this gives me additional control, and also because I enjoy it. Make sure that you know whether the Olympus Flash is only entirely automated, or comes with a manual configuration.

4 – Auto-focus: Does your flash come with infra-red? In extremely low light scenarios, your SLR may have issues auto-focusing. Some SLRs come with in built capabilities, such as infra-red. Others don’t, and can be worth looking to see if the flash you want to use has this functionality. My Olympus Flash FL-50 has this, and is a handy since my SLR doesn’t.

If you keep this list in the back of your mind, then the first Olympus Flash you buy will be appropriate. And after you get extra experience with camera flashes, you can always upgrade.
